Carnosine precursor, counteracting muscle acid.
β-Alanine is a non-protein amino acid precursor to carnosine, a dipeptide synthesised from β-Alanine and L-Histidine, which has been shown to buffer skeletal muscle pH, helping to delay the onset of lactic acid-induced muscle acids.
Several studies suggest that the continued intake of β-alanine increases the concentration of carnosine in skeletal muscle. There is also evidence of a positive correlation between carnosine in muscle and certain parameters used to measure high-intensity physical performance.
